For intrepid explorers, the Eastern Region of Ghana, which is located in the south, is an exciting area to explore. The area boasts lots of wild and wonderful places, that have hardly been explored by tourists at all, but it is also home to some more touristy-y attractions too, which means that there is always something to explore there, whatever your travel tastes may be.
Situated just 17 kilometres to the north-east of the region’s capital city, Koforidua, Boti Falls is one of the natural wonders of Ghana. The twin waterfall, which can be found in Manya Krobo is one of the most beautiful natural sights you are likely to find in the whole of Ghana.
It is also a great place to relax, watch people and wildlife come and go and enjoy an impromptu picnic. If you can, it’s always best to visit Boti Falls during Ghana’s rainy season when the waterfalls are bigger and better and there are fewer people around.
While you’re visiting Boti Falls, you may also want to take the time to have your picture taken under Umbrella Rock, which is located on the same site. The rock, which gets its name from its umbrella-like formation, is sufficient enough to shelter as many as 15 people safely and makes for some fantastic Facebook pictures or snapshots for your travel blog.
Cedi Bead Factory
If you want to do something a bit different while staying in the Eastern Region of Ghana, you might want to check out the Cedi Bead Factory. Although it doesn’t sound like the most interesting of attractions, it is well worth making the trip to the factory, where you can see some of the most beautiful African beads being made. You even get to have a tour given by Mr Cedi himself, and the beautiful glass beads that are made at the factory make the perfect gifts for your family back home or the wonderful people you meet on your travels.
Akosombo Hydro Plant
Situated on the Volta River in the south-east of Ghana, Akosombo Hydro Plant might not seem like a tourist attraction at all, but it is worth making the journey there simply because you can get some spectacular views of the dam and the surrounding landscape, which is breathtaking. The Akosombo Hydro Plant is also one of the most peaceful places you will find in the Eastern region of Ghana, so it’s worth a trip just for that.
If you are interested in the dam and its history, you can pay a small amount for a guided tour, which is surprisingly enjoyable and a good way to fill some time.
If none of the above suggestions takes your fancy, why not do a bit of your own exploring off the beaten track? You’re sure to find plenty of beautiful places in the region, many of which will be largely undocumented.
